Producing Musical Theatre

I'm so excited to be in New York City again this week, meeting with producers at Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU)!

Last night, the Producer Development & Mentorship Program members got to hear from our program directors, Jana Robbins, Martin Platt and David Elliott, plus special guest Liz Ulmer.

The panel discussed the many and varied paths to producing plays and musicals on and off Broadway, which can include table readings, a 29 hour reading, showcase productions, an AEA Development Lab/Workshop, an Off Broadway production in theatres ranging from 99 to 499 seats, or possibly (but not necessarily) on Broadway.

As general manager for the New York Musical Festival (NYMF), Liz brought special insight to the topic of participating in festivals. In addition to NYMF, the panel discussed New York Fringe Festival and Midtown International Theatre Festival.

We also discussed producing at regional, local and university theatres. The possibilities are only as limited as your imagination.
