In this story, eight Egyptian musicians who comprise the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra arrive by mistake in a small town in Israel's Negev Desert. Their booking is set for a different city, but with no transportation out of the town or any hotels to stay at, the band settles at a restaurant owned by Dina (Katrina Lenk), who offers them lodging. Overcoming ethnic barriers, the Egyptians find diversion and companionship with the Israelis through a pervading undercurrent of shared melancholy.

While SoundBeacon executive producer, Glenna Bowman, was in New York this past week, she took time to visit the Great White Way. "The Band's Visit" was the finest surprise of the trip. It is a beautiful story sprinkled with charm and humor; we highly recommend it! Revivals of "Hello, Dolly" and "Carousel" should not be missed. Bernadette Peters shines as Dolly Levi, proving some things (like good wine) just get better with age. and the costumes are stunning. The dancing and singing in "Carousel" are some of the best in the business. (Kudos to supporting actors, Lindsay Mendez and Alexander Gemignani for their standout performances!) And, finally, if you just want a fun time at the theater, celebrating those who, like us, may not be destined to save the world, go to New World Stages and check out "Puffs." This imaginative show gives us a glimpse of what the Hufflepuffs might have been up to while the Griffindors were saving the world. It cleverly moves from one laugh to the next, while giving us a few new characters to love and cheer for.

Glenna met Artistic Director, Andy Berkovsky, when he was just starting this local theatre in 2006, and we have watched him develop a devoted following through quality works and diverse programming. "Noises Off" is one of our favorite shows. The SoundBeacon team has seen it performed on the Bowie High School stage and on Broadway (twice in one season - because you can't beat Megan Hilty and Andrea Martin for an evening of great entertainment)!

We are so excited to tell you what a FUN show this local cast and production team have put together. All the actors are engaging and funny! And they have built a great set for this 90-seat theatre. The show runs through March 10th, so get your tickets now!

Here are the final two members of our cast, who are certainly not least in our eyes! Phil Rodriguez plays King Xerxes' steadfast bodyguard, Harbona, with the perfect balance of sensibility and humor. Bennett Neiman plays Mordecai's Jewish friend, Tamir, with authenticity and charm, and brings other characters to life with equal aplomb as part of the Ensemble.

BENNETT NEIMAN comes to Soundbeacon Entertainment with a lifetime of musical theater experience as an actor, director, writer, and producer in both professional and community theatre settings. Michele also loves things that shine, but, as a member of the Ensemble, she plays roles that are sweet and fun, like one of the Hindush Girls who dances at the king's big celebration.

SoundBeacon Entertainment, LLCtag:soundbeaconent.com,2005:Post/49320142017-11-14T11:36:42-06:002018-07-10T09:55:56-05:00What the heck is a stage reading?
"What the heck is a stage reading, anyway?"

This question was posed to me recently after I sent out a post about our upcoming stage reading of "Esther, A New Musical." It's a good question, so I thought I would share the answer with all of you - in case you don't already know.

A stage reading is part of the development process for a musical. Actors present the entire show, including dialogue and songs, but without sets or full costumes, and with minimal stage movement. The purpose is to gauge the effectiveness of the dialogue, music, pacing and flow, and other dramatic elements of the work. Over the last two years, I have seen numerous stage readings in Los Angeles and New York, from the Wallis Annenberg Center in Beverly Hills, to an upstairs recording studio on the upper west side of NYC, to a rehearsal room in mid-town Manhattan, and what I like most is getting to see new shows that no one else has ever seen. The projects are the same high quality as more well-known works, but, since they are just getting started, the audience gets to see them before they are introduced to the rest of the world.

A stage reading is an opportunity to get audience reactions to the story. Did they laugh or cry when we expected them to? Were they moved by certain lines or music? Did some things fall flat, when they seemed so inspired on the written page. As my son, Tommy Martinez (Broadway NEWSIES, First National Tour of KINKY BOOTS, NBC's HAIRSPRAY LIVE!), describes it, "A musical is like an article of clothing. It may look great on the hanger, but to know if it really works, you have to try it on. So, a stage reading is when you take a script and 'put it on people.'"

At our stage reading in February on Zach Theatre's Kleberg Stage, you and the other audience members will have an opportunity to provide written and verbal feedback on the show, e.g., you can identify moments in the show that are memorable, and provide observations about specific elements of the story and its presentation.

If you have questions or your own thoughts about stage readings, or our current project, "Esther," please leave a comment on our Blog post. We would love to hear from you!
SoundBeacon Entertainment, LLCtag:soundbeaconent.com,2005:Post/48503212017-09-20T15:23:00-05:002017-09-20T15:31:58-05:00They sing AND dance!
We are excited to introduce Lara Noelle Holloway and Emma Center, from the cast of "CALLED BY NAME" (Sept 21, 22, & 23 at Austin Oaks Church).

Emma brings warmth to the role of Leah (Mephibosheth's mother) in CALLED BY NAME (CBN), and dances gracefully to the music of CBN composer, Miriam Relyea.

The cast is in final rehearsals tonight for performances this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

This pride is evident in three Bowie High students who are part of the technical team for CALLED BY NAME (Sept 21-23 at Austin Oaks Church).

Matthew Bosnyak provides lighting design, assisted by Julia Cabrera. Lauren Collins is Assistant Director. According to Director, Glenna Bowman, "all three students are very talented and resourceful. We are lucky to have them on our production team."

Bowman worked with Bosnyak and Collins in May of this year on SoundBeacon Entertainment's 3-person production, "UNSTOPPABLE!"

Bowman praised Bowie High theater teacher, Marco Bazan, who arranged for the students to work on both productions. "Mr. Bazan was Bowie's 2017 Teacher of the Year and I understand why. He is committed to excellence and he cares about his students. I have enjoyed working with him."

Come out and support the cast and crew of CALLED BY NAME. It is an opportunity to see a heartwarming story of love and redemption, and it supports a great cause, The God of Hope prison ministries. Tickets are only $10. We hope to see you there!
SoundBeacon Entertainment, LLCtag:soundbeaconent.com,2005:Post/48468242017-09-14T08:10:00-05:002017-09-18T13:35:48-05:00Meet the Bowmans

No, these Bowmans aren't related, but they share their considerable talent on the stage.

Joel Bowman plays Jonathon (son of King Saul) in CALLED BY NAME, The Story of Mephibosheth (September 21-23 at Austin Oaks Church). Joel is a sophomore at Bowie High School. He has been performing for public audiences since he was 5-years old, when he played the Young Kangaroo in "Seussical" at the Dell Jewish Community Center. Most recently, he played a sinister Flotsom in "The Little Mermaid" at Bailey Middle School and won a UIL Acting Gold Medal in 2016 for the role of Harvey in "The Secret Life of Toads."

Meredith Bowman, a mezzo-soprano, brings a wealth of performance experience to the ensemble of CALLED BY NAME. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Queens College and was named to the Governor's Honors Program in Vocal Performance in the State of Georgia. She has sung with Opera Carolina in "Carmen" and "Porgy and Bess," and with Queens College in "Cosi fan Tutti" and "The Ballad of Baby Doe," among others. Meredith has performed with Reader's Theatre and is active in the theatre arts ministry at Austin Oaks Church.

FUN FACTS: Joel's older brother, Tommy Martinez, played Romeo and understudied Crutchie in "Newsies" on Broadway (2013-14) and was in "Hairspray Live!" on NBC (2016). Meredith sings a mean Madame de la Grande Bouche (aka, the enchanted wardrobe in "Beauty and the Beast") - watch out Audra McDonald!

Tori Robertson hails from Houston, Texas, where her parents weathered Hurricane Harvey with a little less trauma than many of their neighbors. While we continue to keep the hurricane victims in our thoughts and prayers, we are thankful that Tori's family is well!

Tori brings her bright smile and engaging personality to the Narrator role in "CALLED BY NAME," a Broadway-Style One-Act musical written by Austin's own Miriam Relyea and directed by Glenna Bowman.

Tori is a senior at the University of Texas at Austin, where she has performed in "Fame: The Musical," "The Wild Party," and "Legally Blonde: The Musical." As the Narrator for CALLED BY NAME," Tori gently guides us along the journey with King Saul's grandson, Mephibosheth, who loses his birthright at the tender age of five and lives his life as an outcast until King David finds him and restores him to his rightful place in the royal household.

FUN FACT: In December of this year, Tori will perform the role of Kitty in my favorite musical, "The Drowsy Chaperone!"
We are pleased to introduce you to Luis Robert Garza!

Luis plays King Saul's right-hand man, Ziba, in Miriam Relyea's Broadway-style One-Act Musical, "CALLED BY NAME." Luis brings this entertaining character to life with a voice much bigger than his 5'4" frame. With an impressive tenor vocal range, he can belt a G#5. (For those of you who aren't musicians, that is HIGH.) :)

Luis lives in San Antonio, where he has performed extensively with Performing Arts San Antonio, including performances in "The In-Between Musical," Ruthless," "Happy Days" and "Count of Monte Cristo." Luis was nominated for an ATAC Globe Award by the Alamo Theater Arts Council for his portrayal of Renfield in "Nosferatu," and he received Outstanding Performance 1st Tenor in UIL statewide solo/ensemble competition.

FUN FACT: Luis enjoys a variety of athletic pastimes, e.g., roller skating, ice skating, snow skiing, basketball, football, tennis -- well, you get the idea. :)
SoundBeacon Entertainment, LLCtag:soundbeaconent.com,2005:Post/48403842017-09-08T08:10:00-05:002017-09-08T10:37:35-05:00Matthew Edwardsen is King David

At 6'1", with light brown hair and engaging blue eyes, Matthew Edwardsen commands the stage as King David in Miriam Relyea's "CALLED BY NAME." (Sept 21, 22 & 23 at Austin Oaks Church, 4220 Monterey Oaks Blvd, Austin, TX).

Trained at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, Matthew has performed with the New York Lyric Opera at Lincoln Center, Opera Santa Barbara, and Center Stage Opera in Los Angeles, to name a few. His theatre experience is as diverse as it is impressive, including roles in "HMS Pinafore," "The Pirates of Penzance," "Next to Normal,' "My Fair Lady," "Grease," and "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown."

Matthew's finely-honed baritenor vocals beautifully communicate a rainbow of emotions from low, heart-wrenching grief to soaring, unmitigated joy.

FUN FACT: Matthew is a juggler. (But he won't be showing off those skills in "CALLED BY NAME." :) )
SoundBeacon Entertainment, LLCtag:soundbeaconent.com,2005:Post/48390732017-09-06T10:35:40-05:002017-09-06T10:37:24-05:00Meet Joseph Quintana

We are so excited that Joseph is playing the title role of Mephibosheth in CALLED BY NAME, an original, Broadway style musical, by Miriam Relyea of Austin, TX (Sept 21, 22, & 23).

Joseph has extensive theatre and opera experience, with appearances at many Austin venues, including Zach Scott Theatre, UT Theatre and Dance, Austin Opera and the Butler School of Music. He has performed in productions of the El Paso Opera, including "Madame Butterfly" and "Le Nozze di Figaro." Trained at the University of Texas (BMS from El Paso and MM from Austin), Joseph was named the 2011 "Young Artist" by the El Paso Opera.

Joseph's clear tenor voice carries across the room and touches the soul as Mephibosheth sings of his desire to be known for his true self - a self defined by love and kindness, not by a world that shuns him because of his limitations.

FUN FACT: Joseph plays the violin and viola.
SoundBeacon Entertainment, LLC
